Theatment of wound infection after laparotomy by drainage and healing by secondary intention requires many resources from the patients and healing care system.
The secondary intention is casued by long hospitalization, need for higher cost and daily wound dressing before and after discharge.
Hoping to reduce the duration of wound healing precess, we performed a prospective study of early secondary suture on 23 patients with wound infection after laparotomy between July 1989 and September 1990.
The secondary suture carried out two or three days after wound drainage with daily dressing and antibiotic therapy.
Before the closure of wound, the wound edges were excised and the bottom was curetted.
The stitches were removed between seventh and tenth postoperative day and the 22 patients among 23 patients were not reinfected. So, the early secondary suture resulted in a much shorter healing time without complication.
